About Liquid Facelift and Fillers
At Pittsburgh Plastic Surgery, Dr. James Fernau utilizes Botox to alleviate common wrinkles around the forehead and eyes. For a more permanent reduction of the aforementioned wrinkles, Artefill is used in the forehead, while Sculptra is used in the temporal area to alleviate crow’s feet. For permanent reduction of the nasolabial folds, Artefill is used. If a client wants a temporary correction, lasting only 1-2 years, Juvederm and Radiesse are used. Radiesse can also be placed in the thick skin below eyelids – along with Juvederm in the lips – for an instantaneous facelift effect. Fat grafting and/or soft silicone lip implants are a permanent option for lip enhancement. For permanent correction of the tear trough deformity, located underneath the eye and near the nose, Sculptra is the best choice.

Artefill™ is a permanent facial filler composed of unique microspheres enhanced with an outer shell of collagen. The Artefill microspheres are five times smaller than any of the other fillers. Due to the presence of collagen, this filler requires that a skin test be done prior to treatment. Approximately four weeks after injection, the collagen component is absorbed and the Artefill particles remain.
Botox is injected into the muscles to temporarily reduce frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet around the eyes. Botox works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles and reducing the muscle activity that may cause moderate to severe facial lines.
Juvéderm is a hyaluronic acid-based injectable gel. It is used to instantly smooth out facial wrinkles and folds. It is an excellent temporary filler, which lasts nine months plus.
Radiesse™ is a highly effective, temporary filler that lasts about one year. It works well for treatment of the nasolabial folds or laugh lines, marionette lines and facial volume replacement. Radiesse is the product that generated the new term, “liquid facelift.”
Sculptra™ has been used on more than 175,000 patients. Since poly-L-lactic acid, a derivative of fruit acid, comes from neither animal nor human sources, no skin testing is required before a treatment can be done.
