Breast Lift

About Pittsburgh Breast Lift Surgery

At Dr James Fernau, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa in Pittsburgh, PA; a Breast Lift – also known as mastopexy – is a surgical process that raises, reshapes, and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue. A breast lift can reposition the breasts to a higher, more youthful position on the chest. Breast lift surgery may be done in conjunction with breast augmentation to help lift the bust by increasing the volume of the breast.

Some women lose their youthful breast shape and firmness, due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is not uncommon for breasts to sag or lose shape and volume due to weight fluctuations, aging and some hereditary issues. Additionally, some breasts – especially after a woman has experienced childbirth – have a flatter, elongated shape (or are pendulous). In these cases, nipples may begin to point downward or fall below the breast crease. Some breasts have stretched skin and enlarged areolas, and on some occasions one breast may naturally reside lower than the other. Many women choose to enhance their appearance with a breast lift that rejuvenates the figure via a breast profile that is youthful and uplifted.

Who May Benefit from Breast Lift Surgery

Women, 18 years and older, who are in relatively good health, and unhappy with the shape, volume or proportions of their breasts, are excellent candidates for a Breast Lift surgery.

A breast lift is often sought to address the following:
• Lost breast volume due to the natural aging process or childbirth.
• Breasts that have developed looseness or sagginess over time.
• Breasts with a deflated appearance due to pregnancy.

Recovery Periods for Breast Lift Surgery

Recovery times for Breast Lift surgery vary from patient to patient. All patients receive pre-operative packets and post-operative care instructions for their surgical procedure. To improve your recovery period and minimize any post-operative complications, it is important to fully disclose your medical history with Dr. Fernau during your initial consultation. It is also important for you to discuss any use of medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, and recreational substances. Dr. Fernau may wish to also discuss your physical health and any personal expectations or concerns you may have prior to your procedure.

After Breast Lift surgery, patients can expect an initial post-surgical recovery period between 24 and 48 hours. You will also require a reduced-activity period of a few days. During recovery, you will likely experience soreness and swelling. It is normal for these conditions to last for a few weeks. By following Dr. Fernau’s post-operative care instructions, you can mitigate post-operative complications and speed up your healing process.

Note: As part of the recovery process, Dr. Fernau offers four weeks of complimentary post-operative laser treatments until the scars are invisible.
Special instructions related to your individual procedure, regarding rest, special garments, returning to your place of business (or normal daily activity), sports or other physical activities, and exposure to sunlight and outdoor elements will be provided to you by Dr. Fernau.

For your convenience, Dr. Fernau is available at any time and can even be reached after hours. Each patient is given his personal cell phone number for any questions.
