Breast Augmentation — also known as breast enlargement or mammoplasty — is a procedure performed for women who may be dissatisfied with their breast size or who wish to restore lost breast shape and volume after weight loss or pregnancy.
Women choose breast augmentation for various reasons including small breasts, loss in breast volume following pregnancy, asymmetrical breasts (one breast larger than another), altered breast shape due to various conditions, or reconstruction following surgery for breast mass. Overall, breast augmentation surgery in Pittsburgh is an elective surgery option that uses breast implants to create fuller breasts and improve the balance of your figure. The implants used for breast augmentation may also be used to reconstruct a breast after mastectomy or injury.
Breast augmentation does not correct some drooping breasts issues. If you want your breasts to be lifted due to issues with sagging, a breast lift may be required in conjunction with your breast augmentation procedure.
Who May Benefit from Breast Augmentation
Women, 18 years and older, who are in relatively good physical health, and are unhappy with their breast size or breast volume, are excellent candidates for breast augmentation in Pittsburgh.
A Breast Augmentation is often sought to address the following:
- Small breasts that do not compliment your natural figure.
- Loss of mass, shape or volume in breasts due to pregnancy or weight loss.
- Issues with symmetry, where one breast is a different size or shape than another.
Recovery Periods for Breast Augmentation
Recovery times for Breast Augmentation vary from patient to patient. All patients receive pre-operative packets and post-operative care instructions for their surgical procedure. To improve your recovery period and minimize any post-operative complications, it is important to fully disclose your medical history with Dr. Fernau during your initial consultation. It is also important for you to discuss any use of medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, and recreational substances. Dr. Fernau may wish to also discuss your physical health and any personal expectations or concerns you may have prior to your procedure.
After Breast Augmentation, patients can expect an initial post-surgical recovery period between 24 and 48 hours. You will also require a reduced-activity period of a few days. During recovery, you will likely experience soreness and swelling. It is normal for these conditions to last for a few weeks. By following Dr. Fernau’s post-operative care instructions, you can mitigate post-operative complications and speed up your healing process.
Note: As part of the recovery process, Dr. Fernau offers four weeks of complimentary post-operative laser treatments until the scars are invisible.
Special instructions related to your individual procedure, regarding rest, special garments, returning to your place of business (or normal daily activity), sports or other physical activities, and exposure to sunlight and outdoor elements will be provided to you by Dr. Fernau.
For your convenience, Dr. Fernau is available at any time and can even be reached after hours. Each patient is given his personal cell phone number for any questions.
